Ribbon Stockings DIY for the Holidays

Let’s get into some holiday spirit, and at the same time, have some fun with ribbons! Here’s a fun, crafty project to make your season bright this year. All you need is some imagination and, of course, some ribbons. So, let’s get started on these fun ribbon stockings!

Step One: Ribbons for the stockings.

Yes, the first step is to make sure that you have enough ribbons. So first, determine how many stockings you are going to make. This number will help you figure out how much ribbon you need. For each stocking, we used about three feet of four different colors (12 feet total). You also need to determine which ribbon you will be using. We used leftover strips of our two-inch badge ribbon material. The colors we chose are Deep Gold, Arctic White, Navy and Orange.

Step Two: Gather all of your supplies.

Materials needed to make holiday ribbon stockings include badge ribbons, scissors and a sewing machine.

While ribbons are the base supply for this project, you will need several other things as well. A sewing machine is a must for this project. While you can use a needle and thread and sew these by hand, a machine will significantly speed up the process. You will also need a ruler, fabric scissors and some backing for your stockings. You can use a stocking pattern or grab some cheap felt and draw your own. We used a pre-made felt stocking that we picked up at a dollar store.

Step Three: Start measuring.

Badge ribbons cut into three inch strips to make ribbon stockings.

This step comes in parts. First, we measured our ribbons into six-inch pieces. Then we folded these pieces in half and cut them into three-inch pieces. You can combine this into one step and cut them immediately into three-inch pieces. But we found that wrapping the ribbon roll around a six-inch ruler, it saved some time.

The next part of this step is to make sure that your three-inch strips have straight edges. We tried to work with the original edge but found that straight edges worked better. Yes, this process is tedious but well worth it. You can use the ribbon for accuracy, but that is not completely necessary. We mostly just eye-balled it. However, the edges must be as straight as possible so that all ribbons will line up as you are sewing them together. Without being straight, the ribbons can end up either not being sewn properly or being crooked.

Step Four: Figure out your layout.

The mock up for the holiday ribbon stockings before sewing pieces together.

Once you cut your ribbons into approximately three-inch pieces with straight edges, define your layout and mock it up on a flat surface. Now is the time to be creative! And, laying out the ribbons before you start sewing will allow you to see which colors will be touching. Doing this will help you see and maintain your pattern.

We wanted to make sure there was a pattern for our stockings. So, we chose an alternating look so that gold would not touch gold, orange would not touch orange, etc. (Some of the finished stockings could have used a little more time during this step to make sure this happened.) Your layout will be dependent on the size of your stockings. The size we have fit 11 rows with four pieces each. Now that you have a mock-up of what the finished product will look like, you can start sewing. Make sure you line up the three edges flush before starting your stitching.

Step Five: Start sewing your stockings.

While sewing, it is crucial to watch which colors you are working with and go slowly. Make sure you remember which colors attach together. We used a simple, straight stitch to connect all of the pieces. You also want to make sure that the stitch is as close to the edge as possible, but keep it uniform so that your ribbons will lay flat. Then, start piecing your stocking together. Don’t worry about dangling threads as you can trim them later.

Sew together the first four ribbons and double-check your pattern to make sure you didn’t switch anything around. Then work on your second chain checking to make sure the colors are in order. Now that you have two chains, you need to attach them. Again, make sure that your color scheme is not changing. It is important to continually watch your colors to make sure that you are not switching things around. Repeat this process until you have all of your ribbons stitched together.

Between each finished row, lay your ribbons down as flat as possible, and double-check that your pattern is correct. Keep repeating these steps until all of your ribbons are sewn together into a “quilted” look. Double-check your pattern that it stayed the same as your layout. If something looks wrong, take a moment to fix it.

Step Six: The finishing touches.

A felt Christmas stocking used to make ribbon stockings.

Now that you have that done, it is time to add in the rest of your stocking. You can use a pattern to form your stocking shape or use a pre-made piece. Again, we got our felt stocking from a dollar store. We disassembled the stocking and laid out the pieces to go with the finished ribbon pattern. Make sure to match front with front so that the right sides will show when you sew it together. You will need to make sure that all of the stocking’s edges are covered with the ribbon.

We then pinned all of the pieces together (wrong side out) before sewing to make sure that they didn’t slip away from the placement. Again, we used a simple, straight stitch and followed the pre-made stocking’s edge to get the correct shape. Once you have sewn the felt pieces to the ribbon, turn everything right-side-out. Double-check that your shape is correct as now is the time to make any necessary adjustments.

Now that you have sewn these pieces together, you can attach the top and decide if you are including a hanger. Then we pinned the top (right-sides-out) of the stocking onto the ribbon portion and ran a simple, straight stitch to connect the pieces. Once this is done, double-check that everything looks good, and you’re done!

Congratulations, you have just completed a Christmas stocking made from ribbons.

PRO TIP: Add a custom shaped name tag to each stocking for additional personalization!

Choose the Right Corporate Gifts

A corporate gift is something businesses give to show appreciation for the people they work with on a regular basis. When a company shows gratitude for its associates, it strengthens its connections, which secures future business opportunities. The trick is putting money toward the right corporate gifts. The better the gift choice, the more a business gains from its investment. Here are some guidelines to help your company shop smart and get the most from its corporate gifting strategy.

Selecting the right corporate gifts for your …

… Clients

The purpose of giving gifts to your company’s clients is to gain their trust and improve brand image. To accomplish these goals, choose corporate gifts that reflect the quality your company wants clients to associate with its brand identity. Make sure they are durable and come with a satisfaction guarantee so your company knows its clients are getting something worthwhile.

You also want to show that your company values its clients as people. To do this, give each client a gift that matches their hobbies and interests. For instance if one client likes to play sports, buy them a duffel bag for sporting gear. Another option is to give them a personalized gift, such as a desk wedge with their name on it. By adding this personal touch to corporate gifting, your clients will feel connected to your company and continue doing business with you.

… Employees

A businessman hiding a corporate gift behind their back as part of the company's effort to give the right corporate gifts.

Retain your company’s talented employees by giving them meaningful corporate gifts. By showing gratitude for their hard work and dedication, employees become loyal and motivated them to do their best. Express appreciation by giving them gifts that make their jobs more enjoyable. Examples include an indoor plant to have at their desk (assuming they don’t have allergies) and noise canceling headphones to help them stay focused.

As with clients, employees want to know they are valued as individuals. Make their corporate gifts personable by wrapping them in personalized ribbons and presenting them with handwritten notes. Another way to make these gifts personable is to let employees choose what they want. Give them different options, such as a baseball cap, t-shirt or jacket. By giving them the chance to pick their gift, employees will know your company respects what makes them unique.

Pro Tip: Make sure all your employee’s gifts have the same monetary value so no one feels excluded.

… Suppliers

Before your company buys the right corporate gifts for its suppliers, make sure the suppliers are allowed to accept gifts. If they are, then definitely include them in your company’s corporate gifting strategy. Suppliers provide the tools and equipment your company needs, so building a good relationship with them is key to business success. Show gratitude for their help by giving them useful gifts, such as coffee mugs, earbuds and umbrellas. Find that happy medium where the gifts are good quality but not too expensive. This prevents suppliers from feeling they need to give your company something in return.

Don’t forget your ribbons!

Employee Awards to Boost Company Morale

Without your employees, where would your company be? Yes, your company is your idea and livelihood. But without your employees, you wouldn’t be able to do what you do. Every business has at least one employee, if not multiple, that continually makes sure the business is doing everything they can to keep customers happy. Now it’s your turn to make your employees happy with employee awards that will also boost your company morale.

When you have good ways of rewarding your employees, it makes keeping them motivated to do their work easier. Sometimes, good things also come in simple packages. Try keeping a stash of custom top ribbons. Or take the time to pick out a gift and wrap it in personalized ribbon rolls. No matter what, ribbons are here to save your day (and make your employees feel extra special).

giving custom rosette ribbons as employee awards helps with company unity

There are so many ribbon products that will help you with your employee awards. Here are some ways to use ribbons to make your employees happy they work for you.

Employee Recognition

Recognition drives productivity and company morale. We all liked getting gold stars when we were in elementary school, so why not continue with that tradition? Use badge ribbons to recognize when an employee completes a new level and can move up to the next step in their employment. Badge ribbons are also great for attaching to employee name tags to help customers see that your employees have been trained to help them. Add status markers (job titles work, too) to ribbons and help your employees have the confidence in themselves that you already see.

What is employee recognition?

Employee recognition is the acknowledgment of a company’s staff for exemplary performance. Essentially, the goal of employee recognition in the workplace is to reinforce particular behaviors, practices or activities that result in better performance and positive business results.

Why is employee recognition that important?

One of the biggest motivators for employees is to be held in high esteem by their peers. The best way of earning this respect is by being acknowledged for being good at what they do.

While most would relate rewards and recognition to monetary bonuses or extravagant awarding events, employee appreciation doesn’t have to be that expensive or glamorous. Employee rewards can be as candid as a pat-on-the-back and a genuine compliment. It can also be as simple as a ‘thank you’ email or a friendly greeting at work.

Company and Employee Unity

Give the gift of unity with corporate branded ribbon rolls. Choose from a variety of colors and ribbon materials that best match your company branding and logo. Ribbon rolls are perfect for just about everything you need a ribbon for. Wrap these around gifts for employees and clients alike. Use them to decorate an employee’s desk on their birthday. Or just as a thank you for a job well done. No matter why you need these ribbons for employee awards, every roll comes with 100 yards of pure goodness.

Teamwork and Employee Awards

People work better together when you show them the way to stronger teamwork. Give your badge ribbons the strength they need to help with teamwork. Add fun titles onto bright colors to make them stand out. Some titles could be: MVP, Most Innovative, Best Creativity or Going the Extra Mile. No matter your choice for titles, your employee awards will be perfect with these badge ribbons.

Recognition leads to better retention and harder workers.

Remember, an employee who feels appreciated and recognized for what they do is more likely to continue employment with your company. Someone who feels happy at their job will also be willing to work harder. So, help your employees see how much you care by putting some thought (and ribbons) in your employee awards.
